Thermal Modification

Because of its warm, timeless and natural character, wood is very popular as a building material and is therefore widely used for facades, terraces and exterior joinery. Outdoor applications basically require hardwood because of its necessary higher durability class. However, hardwood is quite expensive; a cheaper alternative is Thermowood.

By Thermowood, we mean undervalued wood that achieves the appropriate durability class and stability to serve as exterior wood through proper heat treatment. Moreover, Thermowood has an insulation capacity 23% higher than that of untreated wood, making it very suitable for passive house construction.

Modification increases the number of applications of various wood species which can only benefit the price and wout stock in the world.

For example, we already developed:

- Thermo ayous
- Thermo fraké
- Thermo iroko
- Thermo sapelli
- Thermo oak
- ...

At Byttebier Hout we have the ability to create 3 types of Thermowood depending on the type of wood.

Thermo-S (stability)

The letter S stands for stability, this type of Thermowood can be compared with durability class III and is therefore moderately durable. This type of wood is suitable for the production of interior applications such as floors, doors and furniture. The lifespan of this type of wood is between 10 and 15 years.

Thermo-D (Durability)

The letter D stands for durability and can be compared to durability class I or II. This durable to very durable wood is suitable for outdoor applications such as decking, saunas, garden fencing or wall cladding. The service life of this type of wood is between 15 and 25 years.

Thermo-D+

Thermo-D+ can also be produced by us. This type of Thermowood guarantees durability class I and is very suitable for facade cladding, saunas or other outdoor applications. The lifespan of this type of wood is 25 years or more.

We also work with specialists to treat your wood afterwards. Do you have a particular colour in mind or do you want to preserve the colour of your wood for as long as possible so that it ages much slower or even not at all? This can be done with the right oil or stain.

Do you have a project where fire reaction class Ds3d1 or Bs3d1 is required? Do you have no idea how this can be achieved or what tools are available? We work with the best in the business to deliver your project in compliance with legislation. Just ask!
